Libertarian Objections
Libertarian Quotes
By Bob Powell, 4/2/05

Here are quotes from libertarians that they use to ostensibly promote freedom. They use these to promote their libertarian cause. Unfortunately, they promote a view of "freedom" that actually restricts real freedom. What's needed is a more universal view of freedom as explained here:

The "libertarian menace" is as dangerous as the "communist menace" on the left. That's because libertarians oppose collective or governmental solutions to society's problems even when individualistic or privatized solutions are doomed to fail.

Libertarian ideology denies society the right to effectively address its problems. Freedom, which they claim to espouse, is about more than the ability to freely act. True freedom is about the ability to take effective action. Libertarians and economic conservatives would rather have someone who wants to exit a room be free to run into walls than be truly free and able to find the door.

That's not freedom. It's tyranny.

Quotes:

"Keep true, never be ashamed of doing right; decide on what you think is right and stick to it." George Elliot,  The Gazette, 12/22/04

This quote is particularly telling. A good message in some ways, but "sticking to it" in the face of evidence that says an ideology is failing prevents being open-minded enough to learn.

"The aspiration toward freedom is the most essentially human of all human manifestations." Eric Hoffer, The Gazette, 12/21/04

Indeed. Too bad The Gazette, by promoting libertarian policies, promotes the restriction of real freedom.

"Every form of wealth is dedicated to the improvement and advancement of the so-called common man." William Feather, The Gazette, 12/25/04

See the page on The Conservative Mind for why this is not at all the case.

"When the same man, or set of men, holds the sword and the purse, there is an end to liberty." George Mason, The Gazette, 12/29/04

When governmental checks and balances fail, as now, this is certainly proving to be the case.

"Freedom is not worth having if it does not connote freedom to err." Mohandas Gandi

When government errs, the libetarian says, "See government is a failure. Get rid of it." Instead, it's important to examine the policies from a systems perspective to understand why they failed. It may or may not be that it's a appropriate governmental function. For guidelines, see Explaining Liberal Principles.
