#28. Petroleum Prevarication
5/20/08
U.S. petroleum exports are about 10% of imports. Want to increase U.S. oil supply by 10%? Stop exporting it. Drilling in ANWR won't make the U.S. less dependent on foreign oil as long as the U.S. allows oil exports from that region.

#27. Trade Truth #2: The Dollar & the Deficit
5/6/08
The falling dollar did not increase the rate of goods export growth as pro "free trade" advocates maintain it should. The trade balance was less negative by $50B in 2007 because of increased growth of services exports and decreased growth of goods imports. Oil is a problem, but it's less than 20% of the trade deficit. The petroleum deficit fell in real dollars by $4.6B in 2006 and $3.9B in 2007 despite rising oil prices. There's a major structural problem driving the U.S. toward economic collapse.

#26. The NAFTA Nemesis
4/15/08
After NAFTA, exports have suffered relative to imports no matter how one looks at the data. Imports have slammed exports on all counts: absolute level, growth, and acceleration. The result? Destructive debt that's sinking the dollar and the U.S. economy.

#22. John Edwards on 'Trade' - Why We Need Edwards for President
1/18/08
Of the top three Democratic candidates John Edwards is the only one who understands the "trade" problem and has appropriate policies. The US economy has been undermined and this is continuing at a rapid pace. Also addressed are Health Insurance, Hope, and Illegal Immigration.

#21. Principles of Economic Development
12/4/07
This Liberal Moment summarizes key economic development principles based on a diagram from a 2003 EDC presentation to illustrate the importance of primary employers. With the loss of manufacturing from the U.S. and in the face of a huge and exponentially-increasing trade deficit, we should realize that these principles also apply to the national economy because: "Without primary employers, we only export our wealth, get poorer." Big problem!

#20. Serving the Corporatocracy
11/7/07
Serving the Corporatocracy is based on "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" by John Perkins. It explains how they "build global empire." EHM provide exaggerated financial projections of the benefits of "development," promising enrichment of those at top who go along. This creates a "debt burden on a country that would deprive its poorest citizens of health, education, & other social services for decades." Perkins: "If an EHM is completely successful, the loans are so large that the debtor is forced to default on its payments after a few years. When this happens, ... we demand ... one or more of the following: control over U.N. votes, the installation of military bases, or access to precious resources such as oil or the Panama Canal. Of course, the debtor still owes us the money -- and another country is added to our global empire."
